You lifted their spirits
You bandaged their heart
You held on to dreams that were falling apart
You knew all their secrets
The ones they would tell
You knew what they’d hidden
You knew them so well.
You prayed for the future
You prayed for the now
You argued and bickered
They loved you somehow
You were so far from perfect
Yet in their own eyes
You were strength and compassion
Noble and wise
With tears in your hands
You continued to pray
With hope in your heart
You prayed every day
Now time moves along
And you notice a change
The friend that you love
Begins a new day
You feel quite elated
At least at the start
Then you notice a difference
That tears at your heart
The person before you
Is not who you knew
You look in the mirror
And neither are you
You served out your purpose
Your old friend is gone
They need something else
They must move along
You know in your heart
It’s the absolute truth
What”s now best for them
Is different for you
You lie to yourself
You say “Never again!”
Will you ever be open
To caring again
Someone will need you
You’ll run to their side
You’ll repeat the same cycle
That’s why you’re alive
Find a new friend
