Katherine

(copyright 1991)

Katherine I have come to you
In a time of desperate need
I’ve lived my life with blinders on
To a truth that is unseen

Playing the songs that heal the hurting
Tying so desperately
Won’t you heal all the painful memories?

When you go away, hear my warning
Tell yourself that you’ll be mine
Open your heart babe
You know you’ll never find a new life

Katherine’s just another hard luck story
A woman in love tryin’ to say she’s sorry
One more time won’t heal the hurt inside

Now she’s on her own out in love again
Chasing the memory of what could have been
Hearing the tales
Of a love so far away

Katherine baby listen to me
Tell me I’m your only need
Look into my eyes again
I know what you’ll see

When you go away, hear my warning
Tell yourself that you’ll be mine
Open your heart babe
You know you’ll never find a new life

Katherine’s just another hard luck story
A woman in love tryin’ to say she’s sorry
One more time won’t heal the hurt inside

Now she’s on her own out in love again
Chasing the memory of what could have been
Hearing the tales
Of a love so far away

Fun Facts :

The songwriting floodgates were open wide by the time I penned this one. I was moving forward with getting out of a sinking band situation. I was writing a lot of things that were somewhat dipping back into my Stones influences, yet really bringing in a lot of early Rod Stewart/Faces vibe with a little sprinkle of Bob Dylan. It didn’t really fit in with what my current band was doing.

Adding to my need to flee, was my frustration with playing second fiddle to the con-man who actually was the voice and “leader” of the band. Of course the “band” was actually him, me and a rotating cast of people. I really wasn’t working in the situation that was presented to me when I initially joined.

I also found a muse that unleashed my creativity. The woman that hurled me head over heals into full blown adult love, drama, passion and intrigue. I thought I knew something about love from my high school experiences, but lo and behold, I was so utterly wrong. Real love hit me hard. Her name was Katherine.

If you read my blog entry, Words & Music, My Journey , the young lady I discuss in the “Math and Muse” section is Katherine.
I’m still not sure if I will ever give the full details of the complexities of that relationship. In many ways I choose not to simply because I don’t want any misconceptions or judgements cast upon something so powerful and meaningful.

I wasn’t dumped unceremoniously or screwed over. It was a very complex situation with multiple layers and broken hearts all the way around. We had everything though; passion, fire, impossible odds, real obstacles and an organ transplant on top of everything else. The ending was very sacrificial.

This is my only relationship that actually had a denouement. After time had passed, a brief encounter brought us back together for a brief visit. Smiles, love and warmth were all present. We walked walk away from that final embrace knowing that what we felt was real and sacred, yet impossible to experience beyond a life changing memory, and a whole lot of songs.

Thank you for taking the time to dance in my Cranial Circus.
